FAQs

1. What are the church’s office hours?
The church staff is available to serve you Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.  In case of an emergency, please do not hesitate to contact one of our pastors at home.  Their phone numbers are listed in the church directory.

2. How do I reserve church facilities?
The Community House and other rooms in the church can be reserved at a very reasonable cost for birthday parties or family gatherings.  Call Diane Margita, Administrative Assistant, at the church office for details.

3. Where do I park?
Parking is a challenge at FCC!  The Community House parking lot serves as our main parking lot and when that is full, we spill into the side streets around the church.  Handicap parking spaces are designated in the Community House parking lot, along Travers Street, and in the small lot behind the church.  We ask all who are able to park at a distance, allowing our mobility challenged and our guests to park closer to the church.

4. How do I reserve flowers for a worship service?
A floral arrangement is a wonderful way to memorialize or honor a loved one.  Contact Administrative Assistant, Dorothy Babcock, at the church office for costs and flower schedule.  Following worship, our deacons deliver the flowers to our homebound and hospitalized members.

5. Who do I contact with questions about my pledge or financial contributions?
Judy Jensen is our Financial Manager and can be contacted via email (JJensen@fccfaithful.org) or through the church office.

6. When are CDs of the worship service and copies of the sermons available?
CDs of the worship service are available for a cost of $3 at the Information Desk in the Gathering Space, generally within 15 minutes of the conclusion of worship.  Transcripts of sermons are available on the following Sunday either at the Information Desk or on the church web site.

7. How do I find a Connections Small Group, a Bible Study or Sunday School class?
Call or email Lesley Weir, our Director of Lay and Adult Ministries, for information about opportunities to grow in your faith.

8. What do I do if a loved one is hospitalized?
Please contact the church office if you or a loved one are anticipating surgery or have unexpectedly been hospitalized so that we may provide appropriate prayer and pastoral care.

9. What if I have a new phone number, home or email address?
It is important to keep our data base current.  Please contact the church office when any of your contact information changes.

10. What denomination is FCC?
Flossmoor Community Church is an independent Protestant Church with no denominational affiliation.  When Flossmoor was founded, the village mothers and fathers desired a church in which all traditions would feel welcome.  Thus, they founded a community church without specific ties to a denomination.

11. Who picks the hymns/songs for the worship service?
The preacher of the morning is responsible for the selection of hymns/songs and collaborates with our music team in choosing pieces that fit with the morning theme.

12.  Why do we sit to receive Communion some Sundays and come forward on other Sundays?
We honor different traditions as we take the Lord’s Supper in different ways.  When we come forward and dip the bread in the cup (intinction) we symbolize our need to actively respond to and receive God’s grace in Jesus Christ.  When we remain in the pews we symbolize that Christ’s grace comes to us where and as we are.  Both means of receiving the Lord’s Supper express an important aspect of our faith.

13. Who is welcome to receive Communion?
The Lord’s Supper is not limited to any particular tradition or denomination but is offered to all who trust and believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

14. How old should a child be before receiving Communion?
As we would not withhold food from a child before they are able to understand its benefit, so we offer the Lord’s Supper to children before they fully comprehend its significance.  Children are invited to the table as soon as they are able, in recognition that God’s love and grace is real whether we fully understand it or not.  Parents have a responsibility to instruct and nurture their children in the significance of the Supper as they grow in their ability to understand its meaning and power.

15. Why does our worship differ from Sunday to Sunday?
In general, our worship services follow the same pattern each Sunday – a pattern which is fairly typical of Reformed Worship.  What changes from Sunday to Sunday are the musical style and the form of the sermon.  We embrace a broad spectrum of music, from traditional to contemporary – we’ve even enjoyed Dixieland a time or two!  Rather than split our congregation according to musical tastes each Sunday morning as so many churches have done, we strive to maintain the unity of our congregation by sharing the same worship experience.  Thus, come next week and experience something completely different!

We also recognize that the word of God can come in forms other than a 20-minute sermon from the pastor.  From time to time we use drama, video, faith sharing by members of the congregation, and cantatas or special musical presentations to communicate God’s love and grace in a different way.
